Talk Session by Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta
An enticing session/talk on Corruption in Indian Media by Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Eminent Journalist and educator followed by a documentary on media ethics was held at School of Liberal Studies, PDPU. The topic of the talk session was "GRABBING

EYEBALLS:WHAT'S UNETHICAL ABOUT TELEVISION NEWS IN INDIA"
Mr. Guha, is an independent journalist with vast experience and hold over media matters. He is the face of Lok Sabha TV, known for his comforting style and inveterate commitment to truth. He started his career as a journalist in June 1977 and has been employed with various media organizations including companies bringing out publications such as Business India, Business World, The Telegraph, India Today and The Pioneer.

Plantation of Kesar Mango grafts at PDPU
PDPU faculties and students planted 300 Kesar Mango grafts on 2nd August on Gandhinagar day. Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University is located in Raisan village, which was earlier known for its mango orchard. While developing a campus, PDPU tried to retain those old mango trees and now those trees are one of the special features of PDPU.

SBI Branch at PDPU
The State Bank of India launches its new branch at PDPU Campus. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Shri D.J. Pandian, Dr. P.K. Banik, Shri. P. Nanda Kumaran, Shri N. Ravichandran. All the faculty and staff members attended the inauguration ceremony at the campus as this is a matter of pride for PDPU.

Vacation Workshop at PDPU
PDPU organized summer workshops in 2009 and 2010 for children of surrounding village in which nearly 400 and 600 children participated in respective years. It received overwhelming response from the community. To continue the legacy, this year PDPU organized vacation workshops on various skills for the children between age group of 6 years to 15 years. Around 600 children of 4 nearby villages namely Koba, Kudasan, Sargasan, Por and Premdhara – A school for Slum children in Gandhinagar.

The students of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar is holding its second annual Techno- cult festival, Flare 2011, PDPU’s on the 15th, 16th and 17th of April 2011. Keeping alive the tradition of Flare 2010, the event kicked off on the evening of 15th April with a stellar performance by the folk-fusion band ‘Jaipur Beats’. Their beautiful tunes mesmerized one and all and provided a perfect start to Flare 2011.

The inaugural function of International Conference on “Forensic Nanotechnology” organized by the Institute of Research and Development, Gujarat Forensic Sciences, Gandhinagar in association with Gujarat Council of Science City was held at PDPU on the 25th March, 2011. Prime Minister of Republic of Rwanda, Mr. Bernard Mazuka visited PDPU on 13th Jan 2011 with Ms. Coletha Ruhamya, Minister of State in Charge of Energy & Water, Rwanda and other delegates. Shale Gas Workshop at PDPU Gandhinagar,
Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar has organized “An Orientation Workshop on Shale Gas” with the support of Mewbourne School of Petroleum & Geological Engineering (University of Oklahoma, US). Senior policy Makers, delegates from Indian Petroleum Industry, faculty & researchers from PDPU & University of Oklahoma discussed the challenges and prospects of the Shale Gas industry worldwide. The interactive workshop session aimed to address the identification and production challenges confronting upstream, midstream and downstream development and marketing of Shale Gas resources. Workshop will help to provide an invaluable insight into some of the economic and regulatory aspects of shale gas development in India and across the world.

Dr. P. Lucchese visit PDPU
Dr. Paul Lucchese, A French scientist working on clean energy, visited SSE and PDPU on Wednesday, December 15. He gave a talk to a group of our faculty members and PhD students on "French expertise in cutting-edge technologies for new energy: Hydrogen, fuel cells, biofuels and solar". Dr. Lucchese was accompanied by Dr. Nicolas Poussielgue, Attache for Science and Technology at the French consulate. Mumbai. The aim of their visit was to explore specific research areas in which collaboration may be possible between researchers at PDPU and French research groups.

Urban Renewal Mission Internship
First semester students of SLS along with MA students would attend one month Urban Renewal Mission Internship from 11 December 2010 to 8th January, 2011 with active support from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. During one month internship students would visit six zones of AMC and would study in detail projects like town planning, health revenue, infrastructure and education. The internship would be inaugurated by Hon. Municipal Commissioner Shri I.P. Gautam.

PDPU Raas-Garba 2010
On the occasion of the Navratri, to enjoy the most awaited festival of Gujarat an extravagant evening of Raas-Garba was organized by the University for the students and the staff members of PDPU with Dipti Desai and Amit Thakker. The festival of nine days is always a refreshing change for the Gujaratis who tend to enjoy every bit of it. The university Garba spread the wave of joy and happiness amongst all with harmony. Students performed some splendid garba tricks which set the audience in a different mood. As the festival was much awaited, the crowd surrendered to the rhythm and the beats of the garba.

Live Green - CDI volunteers with Prakriti - Environment Education Bus
The Live Green project is a branch of CDI. Under the Live Green project, the volunteer students of CDI educate the people about saving the environment through various activities. On the 10th of October, 2010; Live Green organized a save environment awareness campaign with CEE. Prakriti: Environment Education Bus, a mobile resource centre, is a joint initiative of CEE and Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL) visited Pandit Deendayal Petroleum Univeristy. CEE team members interacted with PDPU students to generate awareness using a multi-media approach for environmental education which included panel exhibition, interactive models, films, slide shows, games and activities and take away communication material such as posters, wallpapers, brochures etc. The bus broadly focuses on five thematic areas namely; Land, Water, Energy, Biodiversity and Climate Change.

Poster making competition was also organized on that day.

Workshop on Advance Robotics
CRETUS – The Robotics Workshop at PDPU conducted a workshop regarding basic and advanced robotics on 2nd and 3rd Oct from 9am to 5pm. The workshop was conducted in two halves of 8hrs each. The first half of which was conducted on Saturday, 2nd Oct and another half on Sunday i.e. 3rd Oct.

The Workshop was conducted by Mr. Ronak Patel, Onshore Drilling Engineer-GSPC, who has great expertise and experience in the field of robotics and automation and has conducted similar workshop earlier in our college.
The students learned lessons on:
1. Basic electronics and mechanization in robotics.
2. Advanced system and tools

Mr. Diwakaran, Schlumberger India delivers lecture
Mr. Dileep Diwakaran Reservoir Engineer Schlumberger India delivered a lecture on reservoir simulation and the various softwares which are used in developing reservoir simulation model on the very next day. He was impressed by the enthusiasm and thrust for knowledge of the 4th and 3rd year B Tech students PDPU. The students were able to compile and combine what they have been learning over the years in the University. The lecture proved an interactive medium for both. Thus, it instilled confidence among the students that they were in the right direction.

SPE Chapter at PDPU is proud to host the "SPE Sub Regional Meet-Annual Technical Paper Presentation Competition" on 24th October, 2010. At the event PDPU students would get a chance to compete with many other budding engineers from various universities across India and the Middle East Section. The winners of this competition would get a chance to present their paper at the "SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition-September 2011" to be held at Houston, Texas.

Ms. Tripti Kharbanda Farswan, HR manager from Infinium Solutionz (P) Ltd. visited the PDPU campus. They conducted a brief presentation about their company at the campus. They are primarily into providing Inventory Management and Supply Chain Management Solutions through Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) and Global Positioning System (GPS). Simultaneously they are also working in GIS, Oil & Gas Application and SCADA Solutions.

Delegation from Texas A&M, USA would be visited PDPU on 23rd August 2010. The members of the delegation were Dr. Paul Nelson, Associate Director for International Programs, NSSPI and Dr. Adam Heltzer. An interactive session was held between the students and the guests where everyone actively participated. The session proved interesting as it was based on the tips and guidance for further education.

Audit Courses at PDPU
School of Liberal Studies, PDPU, Gandhinagar, conducted a two day workshop (21 & 22 August, 2010) on Photography and Creative Writing and organized a visit to Gandhinagar, Seva Café, and Manav Sadhna as part of its Audit Courses.

Mr. Ketan Modi gave a comprehensive insight into the history, techniques and aspects of photography and completed it by a visit to Indroda Park, where students got hands on experience of working with cameras and evaluation of their work. Ms. Margie Mazumdar Sastry’s Creative writing workshop was extremely interactive, fruitful and result oriented. Visit to Manav Sadhna, volunteer work at Seva Café and visit to Gandhi Ashram, opened up new vistas of thinking and approaches towards the community, enriching student’s sensibilities.

The Audit Courses are add-ons to the students profile, making them a multi faceted and multi dimensional personality and better, aware and sensitive citizens.

The GETCO national conference at PDPU
The Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO ) organized a national conference on Integrated Energy Policy at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar, on August 20th-21st, 2010. The First day was an all-cultural affair, with group performances by the students of School Of Petroleum Management, School Of Petroleum Technology, as well as the School Of liberal Studies of PDPU, among others. The second day consisted of paper discussions on issues like National Approach and Policy on Fossil Fuel Reserves, India’s renewable energy potential, changing energy needs and social setup, and environmental cost of Energy Generation. A total of 23 papers were discussed by distinguished speakers. The students of School of Petroleum Management (SPM) presented three papers that focused on the environmental impact of the Energy sector, and explored ways of mitigating these challenges. The entire paper discussion was followed by question-answer sessions that enhanced the knowledge of the participating audience. All in all, the event was an enriching experience for the students of SPM as well as the visiting dignitaries and other participants.

City Gas Roundtable
School of Petroleum Management took the initiative to invite the City Gas Distribution industry in India for discussions & deliberations on issues that are of vital importance to the development downstream natural gas markets in India. The aim of the City Gas India Roundtable 2010 was to provide a platform for engaging in deliberations addressing the managerial and techno-commercial challenges of developing downstream natural gas markets in India towards the objectives of delivering clean energy for transport, residential, industrial and commercial needs. SPM as a leading academic institution in Oil & Gas/Energy domain organizied this roundtable with an objective to address the issues that are of vital importance from Indian Oil & Gas/Energy industry & policy perspective.

Roundtable invited dignitaries like CEO/ Business Heads/top- decision makers from leading City Gas Distribution companies from Indian Public & Private Sector; Top officials from policy making bodies like PNGRB, MOPNG, Government of India; Officials from Government of Gujarat. The Chief Guest for the Roundtable - Shri. L. Mansingh, Chairperson – PNGRB, Govt of India. The Panel Chair consisted of Mr. B.S Negi, Member (Infrastructure); PNGRB; Mr. L.K. Singhvi, Member (Commercial); PNGRB.

Robotics seminar
Cretus- Robotics and Automation Club of PDPU launched its session for the year 2010-2011. During the year it would conduct a series of seminars, guest lectures and workshops conducted by the giants of the field. This chain began with an INTRODUCTORY SEMINAR which was conducted by The Robotics Committee Members and Winners of last year’s Inter College competition. This seminar aimed at giving the new students an introduction to the robotics and how would it be helpful for their careers. It would guide as well as motivate them to participate in related competitions and seminars.

NASA delegates visit PDPU
Delegation from NASA, Washington DC visited PDPU on 5th August 2010. The members of the delegation were:

  2. Dr. Marc Allen, Executive Officer, Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarers
  3. Dr. Dennis McSweney, Deputy Director, Science Division, Officer of International and Interagency Relations, NASA Headquarters
  4. Dr. Eugene Tattini, Deputy Director,Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Dr. Michael Freilich’s visit presented an overview of the approaches adapted by NASA to document, interpret and articulate observation on earth’s systems, with reference to climate. The visit was asked by the link scientists at the GRIIC and PDPU to understand specific areas of scientific research. They referred to 28 earth observation systems that generate information that is compiled and useful inferences are derived for real life policy-level impacts. . As said by M.F – “The important areas where these interpretations played useful roles were the volcanic explosion and oil spill. Scientists work on atmospheric components, carbon cycles and eco-systems, water: enery and weather systems that will benefit significantly now as well as in the long run, As man is the only species that can predict the scenario of the earth 100 years from now with the help of science and technology.”He also appreciated the spontaneity with which the students of the university comprehended the inputs we provided and related them to experiences they had at local level. These interactions very clearly demonstrated that we’ve gone past the time to debate and get into action.

Weatherford team visit PDPU
Weatherford’s Team including Mr. Abhijit Banerjee-Country Manager HR, Mr. Jigar Thakkar-Poduct Line Manager Completion, Mr. Himanshu Amaliyar-HR Co-ordinator and Ms. Madhumita Deb-Recruitment Specialist visited PDPU campus. They gave a brief power point presentation on RFID. SSD & ICDN Technology and also wonderfully explained new technical innovations happening in Oil & Gas Industry.

Three weeks International Exposure Programme
The students of School of Petroleum Technology will depart for three weeks International Programme towards Global Petroleum technology and International Petroleum Industry, USA. The engineering students will visit world Petroleum Capital Texas and Oklahoma. The three weeks exposure will pave a foundation to PDPU, build global educational practice and diverse global human resource in time to come. Reliance Industry Limited has supported the programme for International Exposure.

The Community Development Initiative is organizing vacation workshops for the children of neighbourhood villages for enhanced learning opportunity and Self-development. Last year, more than 400 students participated in the programme.

On Ambedkar jayanti, Live Green under community development initiative organized a plantation campaign in a government school in Raisan, Gandhinagar where 20 children along with the principal participated actively followed by distribution of stationery items to the school students. The distribution was done by our YI (Young Indians) team to 120 students. The principal "Mr. Bhailal premchand" of the school said that it was a good experience and such kind of activities should be done often.

Students of School of Petroleum Technology distributed study materials to around 120 students at Raisan village primary municipal school on Ambedkar Jayanti to give honour to Late Dr. BR Ambedkar. The students were very poor and lacked basic amneities. The students gleefully accepted the material and promised to study and make india a better and literate place.The material distributed contained Copy, Pencil, Rubber, Sharpener, Crayons, Choclates. The event was done under CII-Young Indians net of SPT. The money for buying distributed materials was raised by organising a cricket league in which students participated. Everything was done by Yi community from fund raising to buying of materials and to distributing them.

The Sports Committee SPT – PDPU is organizing PDPU Challenger Cup – Cricket. The tournament will consist of 8 intra college teams participating. A special team of the faculties are also participating in the tournament. The tournament will see teams battling for the Challenger Cup 2010.

School of Petroleum Technology (SPT), has organized an HR Conclave 2010.The Conclave theme is Generation Next Human Resource in Hydrocarbon Sector. PDPU employees are cordially invited to the Conclave where around 25 participants are coming from various Hydrocarbon Sector industries across India. The HR conclave primarily aims at establishing strong linkages between hydrocarbon sector industries and future human resource,students. Conclave also aims at discussing HR value chain of oil and gas sector with specific objectives of developing an understanding about HR requirement in oil and gas sector industries in India and abroad and addressing subjects like opportunities for generation next engineers in oil and gas sector and challenges.

PDPU Students begin with 3- weeks Rural Internship. The students, divided into 25 groups ranging from five to 25 numbers, have been allocated different rural areas in the state. Each group will work on selected issues like health (HIV), Child rights, NREGA, capacity building of panchayats, collection of data on nomadic and denotified tribes, empowerment of women and youth, right to food and work among others.
