Prof. Kartic Khilar Memorial Lecture

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University hosted its first lecture of “Professor Kartic Khilar Memorial Lecture Series” on the 7th of December, 2010 at PDPU. The lecture was held to commemorate the memory of Late Professor Kartic Khilar who had left for his heavenly abode on the 13th of November, 2009. The lecture was given by Professor H. Scott Fogler, Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Michigan, who was Professor Kartic Khilar’s teacher when he was pursuing his PhD at the University of Michigan. He is being recognized for over 25 years of contributions to collaborative research in the oil industry at University of Michigan. His chemical engineering fundamentals with industrial experience has proven a model for successful cooperation between academics and business. The topic of the lecture was “Globalization and Co-operation: engineers working to solve problems of next decade.”

The dignitaries present on the dais were Professor H. Scott Fogler Prof.N. R. Dave, Education Advisor, Prof. P. K. Banik; Director General, PDPU; Mrs. Jaya Khilar, Wife of Late Prof. Kartic Khilar, Prof. Ajit N. Shukla, Prof. Shrikant Wagh, Prof. Tajinder Pal Singh. The lecture commenced with a prayer in the memory of Late Professor Kartic Khilar. The lighting of lamp was followed by Prof. Ajit N. Shukla giving an introduction about the achievements of Prof. Kartic Khilar. This was followed by an introduction to the memorial lecture by Prof. P. K. Banik. Prof. Shrikant Wagh briefed the students about the esteemed Guest Lecturer Prof. H. Scott Fogler.

Prof. H. Scott Fogler started his lecture by briefing the students about the time Prof. Khilar spent in the University of Michigan and his PhD thesis on the “Water Sensitivity of Sandstones”. He talked about how engineers can cater to the needs of the hour by solving many of the problems faced by people the world over. Prof. Fogler talked about the expectations from engineers and the importance of Critical and Creative thinking in the present times. He highlighted the differences between the different generations. The lecture also focused upon the energy needs of the world, the energy crisis the world faces today and the alternative sources of energy that can be harnessed to meet the energy consumptions. The lecture was a huge success because of Prof. H. S. Fogler impeccable blend of knowledge and humour.

The lecture was followed by an interactive session between the students and Prof. H. Scott Fogler where he answered the queries of students. Later Prof. N. R. Dave, Educational Advisor, PDPU talked about the contributions of Prof. Kartic Khilar to the university and presented Prof. Fogler with a memento on behalf of the entire PDPU family. Prof. Tajinder Pal Singh concluded the lecture by giving the vote of thanks.
